5 out of 5 stars A Must-have in Any Bookmaker's Library   June 3, 2006

The Pocket Paper Engineer is the easiest, most concise and most fun guide I have seen on the subject of pop-up mechanisms. Carol Barton reveals the big secret to it all: even the most complex seeming structures stem from the most basic engineering. Try out the samples and see how far you can push the elements to really make them your own!

5 out of 5 stars Great Pop-Up Reference Book   May 29, 2006

This is more than a "how-to-do" book - it has several examples for the readers to try out the techniques & principles. And it has pockets to store them. I think it's a great idea that extra packets of examples are provided at extra cost in case you made a mistake or don't want to use the ones already in the book. It also will give us (especially pop-up book collectors and artists) a greater appreciation and understanding of how the pop-up books are designed and created. What makes this book even more interesting and entertaining are the quotes placed on different pages relating to creative endeavors. But the bottom line is that it's a great reference guide for any future pop-up book projects!

5 out of 5 stars A great paper pop-up primer   May 28, 2006

If you want to understand how 3-dimensional pop-up structures work in paper, this is an excellent place to start. It takes you through a sequence of exercises that demonstrate the basic principles. It also gives you suggestions on how to apply your own creativity to these concepts.
The book is handsomely and cleverly designed, complete with pockets to store your completed exercises for future reference.
It's great if you're just curious, but it provides real substance for the serious artist. But be careful: paper engineering is truly addictive!

5 out of 5 stars Wow what a wonderful book!   May 26, 2006
What a terrific, easy to use, wet your appetite book! Carol Barton is the "Queen of Pop-Ups" for sure! Known to all book artists as a leader in de-engineering the concepts of pop and moving book parts. This book takes all of her workshop instructions and puts them in an easy to follow order. A must for all of us that delight in moveable structures in our "book art" and a must for all those Moms and Dads that want to give their kids a creative outlet beyond crayons and markers! And, as usual, Carol's book not only teaches, but is a delight to the eye, with great photo examples throughout.

5 out of 5 stars CAROL BARTON- The Queen of Pop-Ups   May 25, 2006

Carol Barton, the Queen of Pop-Up's book,THE POCKET PAPER ENGINEER is a must-have addition to my book arts library.

Not only does she offer clear and easy, step by step instructions for pop-ups, but the tabbed sections have perforated pullouts which you can cut out and actually construct. Barton's even thought to add pockets for storing your pieces and photos of what they should look like when completed.

THE POCKET PAPER ENGINEER contains all of Carol Barton's attention to detail and unique whimsy. There's information on just about everything you need to know along the way, whether you're just starting or been at it for a long time. That's because Barton's an imaginative, accomplished teacher and book artist and REALLY knows her stuff. The information is presented in an appealing, colorful and well organized way in a wire bound notebook format.

I love Barton's illustrations, the pullouts, pockets, images, divider tabs and the way the book opens flat while you work. Although you can order extra cards, if you'd rather not cut up your book or need additional cards for classroom use, you may just want to order two--one to save and one with which to have fun. I did! The Pocket Paper Engineer made me feel like a kid again.
