Excellent for beginners April 5, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is the first book on embroidery that I picked up. It has been great for a newbie like me, but I have a feeling more advanced embroiderers might find it frustrating. The patterns are pretty basic, but there are many and plenty you can do to embellish what's given. I found the color pictures of her work beautiful, and the photos gave me some good ideas for what I could do with my own. I did rely on the beginning section and found it helpful with regard to how to prepare your materials, iron on the patterns, what size hoops to get, etc. The section explaining the individual stitch types was a little frustrating. I did have to rely on a different book that had actual pictures of the stitches in action (this book uses simple 2D drawings) in order to learn them. Overall though, this pattern book is very cute, the inside pockets for storing patterns are handy, and the binding means it will hold up well.
Embroidery is a very fun and inexpensive hobby. If you're thinking about starting, this is a fun book to begin with. It will give you plenty of ideas of projects to do for other people... whether it be a new baby or some kitchen curtains.
Cute, not hip March 29, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is not a bad basic book on embroidery, but I don't understand how anyone can call these patterns "hip." I'd use the term "cute" instead. I was glad I got it from the library first so I could see what the patterns were instead of going from the title. Having seen the book, I'm not going to buy it. The patterns are pretty conventional, not really different from embroidery patterns you can buy elsewhere (except for the one pattern showing an alien in a spaceship, which I did like). In the photos, the needlework is a bit more complex than what you get from the pattern. Photos showing various ways to "interpret" the patterns would have been helpful. But if you are just looking for patterns, you'd probably do just as well or better going to your local craft store or purchasing the patterns you want online.
Misleading description March 20, 2008 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
I was really looking forward to this book, but find that it is mostly clip art and almost no projects. A disappointing waste of money.
Oh, so fun! February 20, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love the easy instructions and stitch explanations. And the patterns are cute and fun to do- plus they're reusable! The pockets in the front and back a perfect for saving used patterns. Definitely a smart choice for a first time embroiderer.
more pictures please! January 14, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book comes with a lot of great iron on transfers for patterns, but I do wish there were more photographs of ideas of projects. I like the author's writing style and the pittures that are there are really nice, I just would like more!
