Myra Rocks! March 10, 2008 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
This book is sensational. No patterns, what a concept. Myra's whole philosphy about crochet sings out loud with this book. I cant wait to get started.
Freeform Rocks! March 6, 2008 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
Free your mind, and your crochet hook will follow! If you are an adventurous crocheter looking for something new to try, or if you've never been able to follow written crochet directions to save your life, this book is for you! Don't expect patterns here....think more like crochet "recipes". Myra Wood inspires the reader to think outside the box and explore her (or his) own creativity. I give this book two thumbs up, and I'm enjoying it immensely.
Already A FreeForm Classic! March 5, 2008 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
In just under 100 magnificent pages, Myra Wood has inspired and motivated a world of artistic, creative, freeform crocheters to have the courage to sprout their own wings, and to follow their hearts, and to create their own designs, perhaps dreamt in the evening hours, from their souls. And in the process, she speaks of her beautiful love of life, and of filling each day with joy. Her chapters on five different styles, plus embellishments/finishing touches, and her Artist Gallery of Freeform Crochet from other crochet artists around the world. . .well, what more could you ask? The photos are exquisite! As a great lover of gardens (as well as fibers), her gorgeous settings left me in awe. Such a perfect blend of the beauty of nature's garden's with the corresponding beauty of fibers' colors and textures!!! I am an admitted fiber arts bibliophile, with a personal reference library of about 900-1000 HB books in various fiber methods & design inspiration, with a concentration on those wonderfully unique & creative ones published both in the USA and in the UK, esp. during the late 60's-mid 90's. The "pioneers" of FFC in the 70's & 80's will surely love it, too! Myra Wood's book would be an asset to their libraries, as well! IMHO, this book is a pure treasure, and it is destined to become yet another classic in the realm of Freeform Crochet. Mel
A Jewel Of A Book March 3, 2008 13 out of 15 found this review helpful
Myra Wood has written an exquisite book, Creative Crochet Lace: A Freeform Look at Classic Crochet. It isn't just about the needlework, though. Woven into the text are words about her philosophy of life....that one should enjoy the journey and feel free to explore any sidepath that beckons. Whether this is done while you are crocheting, knitting or just living your life, spontaneity spices everything up.
The needle artistry is wonderful, as are the glorious photographs set in an intriguing garden. Each page opens you to a different view of how to tap into your own creative powers. A book that offers a glimpse into both freeform and having fun along the way.
"Lose yourself in your crochet. Since this is freeform, just allow yourself to watch what you are doing instead of making any decisions about its worthiness. Pick a theme or a photo that inspires you, and let your fingers wander without trying to make something specific happen."
If you have been crocheting for a while or are a newbie, you will be quite glad you bought this book. It's a jewel.
Totally Enchanting!! March 1, 2008 17 out of 19 found this review helpful
I love Freeform Crochet and now Myra Wood has given us a book that explores the many facets of making Freeform Crochet Lace. The best way I can explain it is to imagine Irish Crochet Lace gone wild, meandering off its pre-assigned path into the wilds of random curlicues, spirals and frills. An apt metaphor for the crochet work would be the backgrounds of the magnificent photographs: the lovely scenes of a wildflower garden. These are no simple rows of flowers, neatly pruned or trimmed. Similarly, the five different styles of Freeform Crochet Lace which are well explained and demonstrated (Funky Filet, Doodle Lace, Tossed Salad, Wild Irish Crochet and Organic Lace Scrumbling) allow the reader to wander from the garden path and begin crocheting among the wildflowers, so to speak. Once you have gained confidence with the various techniques, Ms. Wood explains how to draw templates (taken from garments you already own or following the general outlines of the templates she has sketched) on which to build your lace, thereby allowing you to recreate the fashions in the book IN YOUR OWN STYLE. There are no step-by-step patterns to follow here. You must, instead, let the yarn and your heart guide your fingers and free your mind, thus having all the fun of crocheting freeform-style while creating beautiful lace.
