Possibly the only guide you will ever need. September 8, 2002 19 out of 19 found this review helpful
James Carrington has done an excellent job with this doll-making guidebook. He has taken great care to add infinite amounts of photographs (entirely color) and illustrations to go with every aspect of the text. If a tool or a technique is mentioned, you can bet there's a picture (or two or three) to go along with it. There are also photographs for every step in the creation process, and he leaves no questions unanswered. Originally, I purchased this book to aid me in creating 1/12 scale fairies. Being a fairly non-artsy person when it comes to reconstructing the human form, this book was exactly what I needed. The numerous pages on facial expressions and body language are absolutely priceless for a reference for a sculptor. There are instructions on how to make armitures (the center frame of the doll) and even sufficient instructions on wigging (adding hair). All in all, this is an excellent book for someone first entering the craft, and an invaluable reference tool for the avid doll maker. Five stars.
James Carrington is just the bomb! :-) September 3, 2001 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
The BEST!! This is the best "doll" book that I have ever read. James Carrington is a wonderful teacher and an individual with a wonderful wit. His personality comes through on every page. Even a beginner can make dollhouse scale figures using the instructions in this book... very clear and lots of pictures. But, they'll keep this book for the humor and the commentary on personality long after they're out of the beginner stage. A person who wants to make characters that tell a story should definitely have this book. I hope to see another book from this author, soon... James, you're terrific!
Superb reference for all doll makers May 26, 2001 20 out of 20 found this review helpful
Even though the titles says "miniature", this is the most useful reference all doll makers should have, especially indispensable for beginners. It is the most complete book on doll-making I have ever come across so far. Every aspect was described and illustrated in depth. The charted reference for head and features are very helpful. I am most delighted with the chapters dealing with eyes, lips, facial expression, make-up, and wigging. What's more, every subject comes with a supply list which is very very helpful.
