the heart of art August 13, 2006 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I am very drawn to Traci's art whenever I see it published. My own work is very different so I find myself stimulated to see things from a new perspective. Her book captures more than techniques - it explores the personal nature of approaching art and I feel energized and playfully/sincerely encouraged to express myself. Thank you, Traci. Your words are as important in this book to me as the art itself. I am facing a huge project right now - you have helped beyond words. You have a way of getting to the heart of art that makes me feel confident to be unique. This book has a special place in my studio and life.
Highly recommended. August 2, 2006 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Great techniques clearly spelled out but not in way that makes you have to make art like Traci's. Traci's style is very far from mine (ha, as if I have one yet!) and that doesn't matter because she doesn't want you to make art like her, but like you!
HARD TO FOLLOW July 1, 2006 36 out of 40 found this review helpful
I like Traci's art, and there are several interesting techniques in this book. Be warned, though: Traci begins by recommending you set aside a day for projects, and you must take her seriously: the projects in this book are, for the most part, messy, involved, and complicated. People should know that they will be told to "just" crochet this, latch-hook that, sew here (in a flower pattern), embroider this on-and then, there will not be how-to photos, but just small pictures of snippets of the finished product, with a hard-to-read caption. I guess I need to take one of her classes, as others keep saying, because in several places, I just could not follow Traci's book. This book really is not about collage. This book is a few of the author's magazine articles combined: one about tie dying paper towels, another about using sewing in collage, and another about doodling.
Collage Unleashed/Creativity Unleashed June 28, 2006 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Great book. I actually took a class from the author and this book lets you review/refresh the ideas and techniques Traci teaches in her workshop. Her classes are such a springboard to creativity and an entrance into art growth. I'm so glad I've got this book. I am referring to it often and know it will become a great reference for a long time to come.
Fabric-ate your own collages June 27, 2006 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
Although I expected to learn about photographic collages in this book, I found myself caught up in the interesting techniques provided for construction collages out of fabric. If you like to sew and want to exercise your creativity, this is a great book.
