3 out of 5 stars Artist Trading Card Workshop: Create, Collect, Swap   January 21, 2008

I've only just started working through this book and, while the techniques are interesting, I'm disappointed to see the heavy emphasis (at least in the early lessons) on pre-made materials that are not available where I live. I would have preferred techniques that did not require me to go out and spend money on stamps and specialty inks; rather, to use materials that are commonly found in new and different ways. However, that point aside, the explanations, while brief, are easy to understand and include pictures for each step. There are many techniques to try and explore -- I intend to do as many of them as I can.

5 out of 5 stars Not Just for ATC's   January 9, 2008
This is a great book with quick and easy techniques that apply to any type of collage/mixed-media art. Not just for the ATC crowd! There are also inspiring examples that are candy for the creative spirit ~ yum. It would have been nice to see a larger selection of artists...it seems a select few artists contributed to the collection of samples, none-the-less, it provides inspiration.

Overall a decent book. It has great photographs, but I thought the instructions needed more detail. I did find a few new techniques that I wanted to try.

5 out of 5 stars The #1 Authoritative Book on ATCs   December 9, 2007
2 out of 2 found this review helpful

Bernie Berlin, with all her various roles and titles, can add one more to the list: the author of the most comprehensive, informative, creative guide to creating ATCs on the market today.

I have read, looked at, thumbed through, browsed and even intently studied, every guide to ATCs you can think of. As someone who is coo-coo for mixed media (and every aspect of it), I breathe mixed media creations and altered art. No matter what my overflowing drawers, heaped-upon shelves, or pile-laden floor says, I cannot get enough. I've even trained my children - they bring home bits and pieces of things they find on the street or buried at the playground. I am an altered art JUNKie. (Operative word being "junk" to those who don't see the value in found treasures.)

Artist Trading Card Workshop has not left my sight since it arrived. Every time I look at it I see something new. Ms Berlin takes readers on a journey of techniques, supplies, different artists and creative eye candy. It is impossible to pick up the book and not find a fun and different slant to creating art. Every technique is described with a short paragraph enticing the reader of what's to come, moves onto a list of supplies (that doesn't include a bunch of brand names!), and continues with a well-written tutorial of the steps involved. The directions are clear and concise - and if there are questions in the readers' mind, pictures of each step are included, further driving home the information. Ms Berlin smartly wraps up with finished examples of each technique - using her own work and the work of additional artists (both well known and others) to illustrate just what can be accomplished. If her excitement for each idea doesn't get you and your muse salivating, the finished artwork will.

Missing this book would definitely leave a hole in your library. Even if you aren't interested in ATCs, the methods should not be overlooked - there are multiple concepts and new designs even seasoned artists will appreciate.

The book is rounded out with a short synopsis of what ATCs are, when/where to trade them, where to buy the supplies to make them, and tons of interpretations done by a slew of other artists - with individual contact information listed in the back of the book. This book hasn't left anything out - I'm telling you, it's a MUST OWN. Ms Berlin definitely has a talent for teaching and writing - along with some rockin' artistic skills!
