500 pitchers November 12, 2006 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
I own 9 of this "500" series of Lark books. This one,on Pitchers, was not inspiring to me,on the whole. That may be due to that I tend to work with low fire glazes, and am not keen on alot of stoneware glazing-something this book has a lot of.If you are a potter, and love highfire glazes, you may love this book.I sure wish I did,but as I personally do not,I sold it to a friend who is a lover of stoneware techniques. She tells me she likes it very much!In case your wondering,I have the animals, figures and bowls, cups and teapots! These publications I am extremely pleased with. Most of these have seriously unconventional approaches, and thats what I love! This particular selection would be great for someone who is a practical potter, and wants inspiration to futher their love of what they like to do best.Just because I didn't like it for my own personal use,You just might love it!
Creative and unusual August 19, 2006 1 out of 6 found this review helpful
Beautifully presented, outstanding photography. Great insite into how the artistic mind sees a common functional piece. Being a potter you truly appreciate the craftmanship show, even if you do not appreciate the form.
Great Ideas on an Ancient Item August 16, 2006 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Pitchers have been around since pottery was invented, and probably before that. And the basic elements of the design haven't changed much since. You have to have a handle, a spout, a foot, and a belly. After that there is almost an infinite variation in design opportunities. And this book shows 500 (I guess, I didn't count them myself but that's what the title says) pitchers from hundreds of artists, from about 2002 through 2005.
It's an idea book for the budding potter, or the one searching for a new concept. It shows what the modern artists are doing and it is proof positive that the design efforts of the modern potters continue to be as creative as those that went before. Here is every style from Greece to ultra modern, from American gas station to oriental porcelain, from wheel thrown to slab built. It is beautifully photographed and printed.
Excellent idea book for the potter August 14, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This, as well as all of Lark's 500 series are great for the pottery studio. Not only do they show the creativity of many potters but when students/potters are in a rut, it can take you right out of it.
