Not just for the holidays October 29, 2005 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
I approached this book with mixed expectations. On the one hand, I admire Melanie Falick's editorial flair. I own most of the books that she's edited and I am particularly fond of Weekend Knits and of Knitting in America [republished recently as America Knits]. My trepidation was borne of the notion that the patterns might be ALL for the holidays. My mind was immediately put at ease as I first flipped through the pages.
Of course there ARE several holiday-themed patterns: menorah pillow, tree skirt, ornaments, to name a few; all of them understated and not gaudy at all. Then there are lots of non-themed patterns: socks, mittens, shawls and scarves. I especially appreciate that the patterns are of various difficulties, so you can pick and choose between challenging and/or time consuming and quick/simple projects.
As with all of Falick's books, the photography is luscious. It would be hyperbole to say that I loved all the projects. However, there were only a few patterns that I ruled out immediately as ones that I am completely uninterested in - this is rare for a knitting pattern book.
And yes, if you happen to be a non-knitter and are considering this book as a gift for a knitter, you can't go wrong.
SO good we ordered 2 more October 27, 2005 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
I loved "Weekend Knitting" so much that I ordred Handknit Holidays sight-unseen. And I was not disappointed! Absolutely gorgeous in every way possible. Inventive, timeless designs, amazing, luminous colors and breathtaking photography make this a must have. Two friends saw my copy and each ordered one the same day (and one of them doesn't even knit yet!)
Excellent Book October 21, 2005 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
This book has topped Weekend Knitting as my favorite knitting book. The patterns are interesting and give short & long project options. I'm very pleased.
a wonderful surprise September 27, 2005 45 out of 49 found this review helpful
I really wasn't expecting a lot from this book. I thought it would be another Christmas-hype book. I couldn't be more wrong.
The projects are wonderful and the photography is great. The projects are varied and will suit many types of knitters. There are quick and easy projects like the knitted ornaments and garland, as well as more complex projects like a stranded tree skirt and a lace shawl.
There are a variety of lovely yarns used in here, and some in unexpected ways (e.g., a linen-blend yarn for above-the-knee stockings and mountain colors bearfoot for a stranded cape). The projects are inspiring and I've found myself thumbing through the book while sitting on my sofa for three nights in a row.
I'm so happy to add this to my knitting library.
A Must-Have September 19, 2005 71 out of 75 found this review helpful
This book is definitely a winner. It is one of the few knitting books that I have looked at and said, "I want to knit everything in there!". There are Christmas ornaments, garlands and treeskirt and stocking sets. Also, several styles of table runners and a clever lace tablecloth by Annie Modesitt that uses panels of linen in between lovely lace strips. One item I think I'll be making this year is a delicate lace "frame" to use as a mat for a photograph (within a wooden frame). The garments are wonderful and most (except a little tank) are in a variety of sizes, from small to plus sized. ALL yarns in this book are of the best quality; no craft store yarns here :^) This means some of the projects can be very expensive, but I like to see projects knit with luxurious yarns because I know I can always substitute if I need to. I know shrugs have been done to death lately, but there is a new and interesting shrug idea in here from Norah Gaughn that is lovely. Highly recommended for all your gift knitting, and holiday decorating needs. The book is slanted more toward Christmas and Winter Solstice celebrations, with only one specific Chanukah project (a lovely cable pillow in which the cables form a mennorah). Many great designers, many fabulous yarns.
