Fantastic Book July 28, 2007 This is a great book, I love it. So many great projects and useful tips. I've already made 4 things from this book and have plans for many more.
lovely sewing book July 28, 2007 I'm new at sewing and this book inspired me to keep at it. Cute projects and good instructions....
fun; pretty pictures, approachable writing, but ... too girly, too accessory-focused July 26, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'm a very experienced sewer (although I wouldn't presume to call myself a "seamstress" which sounds so high-falutin') and I eschew patterns for things I can just figure out on my own. I couldn't resist buying the book, though, as I read Amy Karol's blog, buy her 'mail order' newsletter and love the things she makes.
However, I was unprepared for how beginner-y the book was. Sure, I should have figured that out by looking at the cover a little more closely, but it was pretty so I didn't pay much attention. Now that I've spent a little time with it, I've decided that it's a fantastic book and one I'd buy for anyone new to sewing; but not really all that useful for me. The adorable bag on the cover, for instance, I could have sewn without looking at the instructions; the cute little kids' items in the back section are too girly for me (I have three boys).
As someone else mentioned, the parts meant for a beginner are great reinforcement for someone more experienced; and her techniques for applique are really useful. I'm definitely the sort who avoids pinning, but also avoids pressing; I'll be picking up the iron more after reading through the book. On the other hand, her list of sewing essentials would be daunting to someone new to the craft (I doubt I own half the things on her list).
I enjoy owning the book because it is pretty and I'll certainly turn to it if I want to figure out that freezer paper technique, or do a scalloped edge on a blanket. Unfortunately, I wish it was more useful to the girl who wants to look like Amy Karol, with her cute simple clothes and sunny style. I'd love to see a book from Amy that was more focused on clothing; simple ways to alter patterns, for instance; and less on The Way of the Handbag. (I wonder if her editors kept her away from apparel because it's too formidable for new sewers?)
If I was stranded on an island with my machine and fabric... July 26, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
...this is one of the books I'd want with me. I'm somewhere between a seasoned and beginner and love the basics and tips that Amy Karol provides. Some of these are old standbys for me, some were new and some I totally forgot. I'm the type of sewer that loves these kinds of projects--great basic purses, tote bags, fabric coasters--that require no patterns and that you can transform each and every time you make them. I'm gifting my sister with this for her birthday (I'd LOVE for her to make ME the purse that's on the cover!)
Bend-The-Rules Sewing: The Essential Guide to a Whole New Way to Sew July 20, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
A great book from a very talented lady. An essential addition to any sewers library, from the beginner to experienced. Great fresh projects, easy to follow instructions with lots of helpful tips and shortcuts. You will not be disappointed and the only trouble you will have is choosing which project to make first.
