If you are going to buy only one basic fun sewing book this is it July 10, 2007 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
I seem to buy a lot of the hip new sewing books that have been coming out like crazy but this one I actually read from cover to cover. People often ask me about what books to buy and now I have an easy answer. This book is the perfect book if you are only going to buy one and want to either perfect your current skills or learn how to sew as a beginner. The projects are fun and Amy's style of writing and humor is fun to read. I am also a big fan of her blog and love it when my favorite bloggers write books.
Just the handholding I needed to take the leap with my sewing machine July 10, 2007 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I read a fair number of crafty and sewing books, and often stare longingly at my sewing machine after I see an inspiring project, but up until this book have no managed to feel unintimidated by the task of sewing. This book changed my feelings about sewing and made me feel that it was do-able. I've tried two patterns so far with great results, and I love the text and the photos in it. I am definitely a beginner sewer and I think this book would be best geared toward other beginners, but if you are an experienced sewing geek and just love looking at inspiring projects with great photos, you will also find a lot of value in this book. It's a gem of a book.

OK, I am a true beginner and not a good one at that. But this book is not for beginners. This book is for people who are not concerned with little things like measuring. I totally get how most thought this is a beginner's book because the book devotes a lot of time to supplies. And even I had the cut-to-the-chase moment with it. However, if you are new enough like me and would like usable patterns and dimensions, this may not be for you. The patterns in the back of the book need to be enlarged and my Canon simply was not up to task. I hated having to tape together two sheets of paper. I guess you could go to a printer as she suggests in the book, but I am not willing to do that. I found the hand drawn patterns shoddy and made for a consistently lopsided bib. The written instructions are very poor and assume you know some steps she has let out. Like hand stitching the opening left to turn a blanket right side out. Part of the instructions for a scalloped baby blanket read: "Trim and notch around the scallops, leaving about 1/8" edge and snip at scallop inside points really close to the stitching. Turn inside out and iron all the scallops out. Use your finger to help ease these out. Press." Huh? Am I reading that I should trim the right side of the blanket? I doubt that is right, but she then is telling me to turn the blanket inside out. My point is, perhaps a true newbie would assume to notch the right side of the blanket. All that said, the book is lovely and I do wish I was a better sewer and did not need precision and hand holding. I would make almost all the projects in her book, but not yet. The frustration may turn me off from sewing ever again. If you are the type of sewer that can wing it, you will love this book. I just wanted to dispute that this is a true beginner's book. Not in my case, which is a pity because the learn to sew books have the worst 1982 projects in them. She is brilliant and I think poor editing and proof reading is to blame for what is lacking in content.
Love this book (review by a beginning sewer) July 5, 2007 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Absolutely love this book. I have already made the smock and a bib. Both successfully. Both so adorable I can hardly stand it. I am a complete novice sewer, and the book suits me and my attitudes about sewing perfectly. The pictures are delicious. The illustrations make the projects feel accessible and less intimidating. The author encourages you to take pride in your things looking homemade (which sometimes less experienced sewers may struggle with) and encourages a new perspective about what we value in general (new versus old, machine versus hand or homemade). Perhaps I am reading into it a bit, but that is what I felt after reading some of her words. I believe the entire book rings true with the author's words about wanting the reader to love sewing. It really feels as if Amy Karol is sitting right next to you while you're working on a project. She encourages you along. The sections seem to be organized logically to me as the information has always been easy to find (reference) when I have needed it. I can't wait to work my way through a lot of the patterns and ideas--everything seems practical and fun as opposed to good-for-making-once. I would highly recommend...
not too outside the box July 5, 2007 14 out of 16 found this review helpful
Simple and lovely projects good for a beginner sewer. The photos are gorgeous as are the fabrics Amy has chosen for the examples. But this book is not really a new way to sew. It includes no revolutionary ideas or projects more unique than what's popular in the "modern" sewing camp. The directions and ideas are mostly clear and straightforward but tend to provide a finished project that is, well, sometimes sloppy. "Homemade" can be well-made, too, not necessarily hastily-finished or simplistic.
