Excellent illustrations, very informative. August 9, 1998 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
If you're a beginning quilter, this should be the first book you buy. It will see you through many projects and teach you all of the basic quilting techniques. Almost as good as having an experienced quilter sitting next to you and guiding you.
easy to use visual guide for ALL quilters April 24, 1998 This book lives up to it's tiltle and then some. Wonderful how to tips, shortcuts, pictures, multiple ways to do the same tecnique, and a bit of quilting history for fun. List of vendors(addresses and phone #'s) for unique quilting gadgets. Short concise articles on almost any suject about quilting that I enjoy reading like a good novel. Written by a group of highly respected quilters from around the world. Truly the "Joy of Cooking" to quilters of all levels.
complete and inspiring, but occasionally too brief December 7, 1997 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
i recently borrowed this book from a quilting friend in order to do sewing machine research and was very impressed by this book. it covers every type of modern quilting method. the instructions are detailed with many pictures and "try this" hints. however, i felt the description of channel applique was confusing--some techniques deserve more than 5 paragraphs of description. i'm going to order this book; i was about to start buying books describing individual techniques (applique, hawaiian quilting, sashiko, etc) when i realized this book has it all. -teri fratkin
Great encyclopedia for long time and new quilters alike August 5, 1997 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
As a long-time sewer who is new to quilting, this Rodale Press volume has become the most heavily used book in my quilting collection. The topics are arranged alphabetically, yet a table of contents and excellent index are included. Though arranged in alphabetical order, the excellent cross-referencing enabled me to read through the entire volume. The illustrations are precise, reminiscent of Taunton Press drawings. In the two months I've owned the book, I've had wonderful results by following the directions for paperpiecing and template making. The book brings all major quilting issues into one easy-to-view/read location. A resource guide rounds out the volume. This volume is heavily dogearred already, and I look forward to completing my first queen-sized quilt, with the volume by my side, rather than holding up the leg of a table.
