First Resource Book I Grab January 10, 2006 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
I've been sewing my entire life but have only been quilting for a year. This book as proven to be an exceptional resource. As I teach myself to quilt I constantly have questions about techniques and terminology. This book is amazing in it always has an entry for whatever I'm trying to look up.
I like the way the book is written. It gives contextual explanations along with pictures that combine to give me a detailed understanding of the technique. It often explains different methods and why each one might be used. Very useful as I develop my own style of quilting.
An excellent addition to your quilting reference library.
Very, Very helpful January 4, 2006 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I am a quilting beginner, who was quickly taught by my mother in law. After struggling through one quilt, I decided to purchase a quilting book. I decided on this book due to its great reviews. This book is WONDERFUL; it has so many ideas and suggestions. After reading the whole book front to back I was inspired to start another quilt and of course re-read certain chapters that really pertain to the type of quilting I do. If you are a beginner or would like a good reference book, try this one. It is certainly worth the money!
a delight September 12, 2005 7 out of 10 found this review helpful
What a delightful book for the beginner to have. Explains a lot of definitions and explanations of techniques used. Very helpful
One of the best learning-to-quilt books August 31, 2005 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
Along with "Quilter's Complete Guide" by Marianne Fons and Liz Porter, these two books are the books I look up quilting information on. Very comprehensive and colorful, done in alphabetical order. For beginners and advanced users alike.
Great book, but it's a REFERENCE book August 13, 2005 54 out of 55 found this review helpful
I bought this book a while ago because it was so well recommended here. As a beginning quilter, I figured I could use all the help I could get. However, the book languished on my side table for quite a while, because I began with the wrong expectations.
Most books for novices are "follow the bouncing ball," showing you how to create a project step-by-step. This one is different; it's more of a visual encyclopedia. So, if you're trying to learn the basics (first you choose the fabric, then you cut it, then you stitch...), start with another book before this one.
But DO pick up the Quilters Ultimate Visual Guide, because it's a truly excellent reference book. At some point, you'll have a "simple" question for which you don't know the answer, and this book seems to have them.
Case in point: I've finished a small wall quilt. (Yay!) I want to hang it up. How the heck do I do that? This book shows me several options, including how to construct a sleeve to hold a dowel, and advice about using a dowel versus a curtain rod.
It's not the first quilt book you should buy. But it's sure to find its way into your collection.
