Borrowed this book from a friend when I was having trouble sewing up some sweater seams. Had to buy one for myself almost immediately because I want it in my (limited) library of knitting references. It covers several useful techniques with clear explanations, pros & cons for each, and wonderful pictures that help explain anything the words might have missed. Futhermore, the spiral binding lets it lay flat so you can concentrate on the information rather than what you need to run and get to keep the pages open. I don't buy every knitting book I see, but this one's worth the shelf space.

I've been knitting for more than 40 years and learned several new techniques from this book. The photos and illustrations were very good. The index in the back is helpful. The covered spiral binding protects anything that may be in your knitting bag but conveniently lies flat. This book would be a nice gift for a beginning to intermediate knitter.

I agree with all of the reviews in that the basics are largely covered and the photographs are excellent. The only thing that I wish to point out is that if you have a basic knitting reference on your shelf, you will find that this book does not cover anything new. What it provides is a quick reference to the basics that knitters use frequently in a package that you might be willing to lug around in your knitting bag. It isn't small by any means but it is a heck of a lot smaller and lighter than Vogue.
If you have been knitting for a while and don't need a reference for basic techniques, I'd pass on this book. Be sure to take advantage of the "Search Inside" feature to look at the Table of Contents. That should be enough to tell you if you'll find this book a useful addition to your library.
Nothing Beats Color Photos April 9, 2006

The book is mostly as the title states; it is comprised of finishing techniques, but also has a few basic knitting techniques such as increases, decreases, edge stitches, selvages, and even a few crochet stitches for borders. The pictures and illustrations for seaming demonstrate both the technique itself and the finished seams. It has both bright color photos of the techniques, along with clear and sharp color drawings. The author wisely includes benefits and drawbacks with each method. It is formatted in a legible, easy to read way, which is key to me, as I am a visual learner. My favorite parts are the beginning, which clearly and consisely show 7 cast on techniques, and the buttonhole chapter, which demonstrates 8 various methods of making buttonholes, always a bane for me. All this in one book, with a shiny hard cover and spiral bound to boot. This book is sturdy enough to withstand wear and tear, yet small enough to carry in my knitting bag. I only wish the author would have expounded upon the short row techniques, but, as the title states, this book is about finishing, so the short row explanations are limited to preparation for binding off. Also, more could have been said about weaving in ends, as in lace or complicated patterning. Still, 5 big stars, a reference book not just for beginners, and a winner. I'm quite happy with this book.

This is the one book I always carry in my knitting bag. Wonderful easy explanations, it's a great resource.
