can I give 6 stars? August 30, 2008 This book is full of amazing cakes, pictures, and recipes. This is one of my favorite cake books, and I have ALOT. It is very high quality, you could put it on your coffee table.
If her style is not your thing, then this book is not a "masterclass" August 30, 2008 The subtitle of this book makes it sound like it is going to be very comprehensive when it comes to technique. But unfortunately it is really a gallery of (in my opinion... and I know she has a lot of fans out there) over-the-top, carnival-inspired, topsy-turvy cakes with only very general guidelines on how to make them. Also, because she doesn't do more classic and elegant cakes, her designs tend to look dated quickly.
The last 20 pages or so of the book are about actual technique, but I don't feel like those 20 pages justify the price of the book.
Obviously Colette is an amazing artist, but I prefer Toba Garrett's "The Well Decorated Cake" and Kate Sullivan's "Kate's Cake Decorating" for actual instructions and more timeless designs.
wow, wow, wow -- amazing and comprehensive June 26, 2008 These cakes are amazing. Stunning. Out-of-this-world gorgeous. The cake represented on this website, believe it or not, is one of the plain Janes of the bunch. This book is not for beginners! But it will be worth working up to being able to create cakes like these. They're not just cakes -- they're ephemeral sculptures. You'll find a cake appropriate for any theme or event. Some of the cakes are quirky and funny; others are elegant.
Some reviewers said that they felt the instructions weren't comprehensive enough. Well, it's just that the step-by-step technique instructions are only given once -- in the first portion of the book, and they are plenty comprehensive. They just aren't reiterated with each cake. You have to read about the techniques first, and then you get the more detailed information for each cake.
I am in awe of Ms. Peters' prowess -- these cakes really are amazing.
Not a How to Book June 10, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I thought that the price meant that I would be getting great information on how to make a 4 tier cake. What I got was a book full of amazing cakes, with little direction. They were very over the top. The price was way too much for this book. I also bought the Wimsical Bakehouse with this one and it was alot less but came with alot more information about how to make these cakes. I gave it two stars for the fact that her cakes are breath taking, but the content was a big let down.
As the title says... April 18, 2008 This is the really the book if you dream of cakes. It has the most gorgeous cakes you can ever think of and then instructions on how to create them. I get a lot of ideas from this book. It is one of the best books around for cakes.
