4 out of 5 stars Good stories   February 10, 1998
A good collection of Krakauer's writings. References to the Gunks and other climbing was fun. One thing a found amusing was that he seemed to equate anything hard or scary with unprotected 5.12 face climbing.

4 out of 5 stars Questions about Jon Krakauer's Writing   December 11, 1997
What I love about Jon Krakauer's books is that they talk about a subject that I have no interest in--climbing--but I still find them fascinating. I've been reading reviews of his work, and I can't decide if he is a tremendously gifted writer or he is the beneficiary of fantastic material. I would be interested to hear other people's comments about his writing and why he appeals to so many people, or if you have any information resources to point to, that would be great, too. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent read!   September 8, 1997
I had never heard of Jon Krakauer before I encountered him on the front page of the Amazon site. Eiger Dreams is a collection of short autobiographical stories concerning mountaineering exploits. I found his style clear and direct, and ha captured a freewheeling spirit totally in keeping woth the subject matter. I enjoyed the book immensely. If you too enjoyed this, then I recommend two books by an English climber, Joe Simpson, called 'Touching the Void' and 'This Game of Ghosts'

5 out of 5 stars Great writing, gripping stories   June 7, 1997
One of the most memorable was his personal story of climbing a remote peak in Alaska solo... at around 20 years old, he just left his construction job and set out for Alaska because it seemed like doing the climb would straighten out his life -- hair raising misadventures result, and his commentary (from age 35 or whatever) on his youthful idealism is pretty funny and real

5 out of 5 stars A great book, Jon Krakauer is a fantastic storyteller!   December 17, 1996
