5 out of 5 stars Mountaineering Freedom Of the Hills 6th Edition   October 9, 1997

The 5th edition was superb they have this made this one even better. The section on the geology of mountains is extremly helpful. Also the format is a little clearer. This is the Bible on Mountaineering. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Still the definitive guide   August 9, 1997
A couple of years ago a young man (just out of his teens) died falling down a descent route called Alis at Mount Arapiles in Australia. I now own one of the ropes he was trying to rap on. He would not have died if he had read and understood the lessons in this book. Read this and random things such as rock-fall may get you. Stupid death is unlikely. If you climb (and climb I must), make sure that your technical skills are up to scratch. This book is the place you should start

5 out of 5 stars The one book on mountaineering that you MUST have!   August 6, 1997

I own a first edition copy of Mountaineering: Freedom of the Hills, as well as the current edition, and several editions in between. I can not imagine a person being interested in Mountaineering, Rock Climbing, Ice Climbing, etc.and not wanting to own a copy of this book, especially now that it is available in the more affordable paperback edition.I first started rock climbing in 1971, before it became as popular as it is today, most, if not all, of what my climbing partner and I knew of climbing, from technique to equipment, came from Mountaineering: Freedom of the Hills. Of all the climbing/mountaineering books that I own, Mountaineering: Freedom of the Hills never seems to make it back to its spot on the bookshelf

5 out of 5 stars As close to a complete climbing reference as you'll get.   December 22, 1996

Mountaineering : The Freedom of the Hills give you a no frills description of everything from how to find the mountains using amap and compass, to how to rescue your injured partner. Learn about placing your own protection. Find out what you shouldconsider when buying climbing equipment. The writing is clear, and the illustrations are simple but effective. This is a must-have for all climbers.
