4 out of 5 stars too much thin air?   November 4, 1999
6 out of 10 found this review helpful

"Justifying idiocy" I thought when I first read about ice climbing. As the mother of two boys I am always trying to figure out the WHY of male behavior. Krakauer has given me more insight into the male facination with extreme sports than any other source. He goes beyond mere descriptons of the thrill to examine the WHY. JK provides a peek into the male psyche for those of us fortunate enough not to posses one. Some of the adventures beg credulity - too much hypoxia Jon? But I'd give this book 4 pitons up.

2 out of 5 stars i rated this book because jon krakauer tells everything from   October 18, 1999

5 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this book a whole lot   August 31, 1999

I've read all of Jon Krakauer's books, and while this one doesn't have the huge drama of Into Thin Air (because shorter stories can't possibly build up like a novel can), it is just as entertaining because of the broader scope.

Not only are Jon Krakauer's books extremely interesting, but I feel like I know quite a bit about mountain climbing after just having read them. I think that for everyone who enjoys a good, real-life adventure, this is a must-read.

4 out of 5 stars A good read-for climbers and non-climbers alike.   July 16, 1999
An enjoyable summer read. Krakauer writes of places both familiar and unfamiliar. Each tale is exciting and gripping.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Krakauer compilation   May 14, 1999
If you are looking for great perspective on your next adventure to Chamonix, Alaska or the Himalaya, check this one out. I found the paperback to be a great escape during business trips.
