Amazing book November 10, 2006 This book is absolutely great and surprising. It's not "only" about the Iditarod, it's about Life. Paulsen is a surprise: he is a truly gifted writer and he writes with his heart! I love this book! It's one of those rare life-touching, life-changing books.
Mad, Wacky and Hilarious November 9, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I highly recommend Gary Paulsen's Winterdance, which tells the chilling, terrifying, and often hilarious tale of the author's first run of the Alaskan Iditarod. For those of you who don't know what the Iditarod is, it's the dangerous eleven hundred and eighty mile dog-sled race through the Alaskan wilderness. A racer can face, and Paulsen does, all of the following hardships; blinding wind, snowstorms, frostbite, dog fights, moose attacks, sleeplessness, and hallucinations. The novel goes through all the stages up to, during and after the race is complete. The blinding fear as the race nears, the lack of confidence, the desperate scramble to find enough dogs, then the attempt to bond with those dogs, the hellish and unrelenting race itself, the beauty of Alaska's landscape, and the feeling of accomplishment once you realize it's failed to kill you. The humor in Paulsen's writing is what makes the book. Sometimes making you laugh out loud while at the same time making you terrified for his safety; much of his training is him being dragged out of the yard on his face. Paulsen does an excellent job of relating to his reader by describing his rookie mistakes and ignorance, that all of us would make and have. He also tells the reader how often he felt like quitting and how crazy the idea to start the race was in the first place. Paulsen managed to write a classic that will be remembered long after most outdoor adventure books have been forgotten.
Funny, entertaining, a great read! May 21, 2006 As a big Paulson fan this book was a great read. Gary provides an insight into the iditarod that only Gary can do. You will feel the cold, share his pain and truley feel you are running the race with him. Gary's love of his dogs and nature come through in this book. Anyone who wants an entertraining lesson on the iditarod, must read this book.
Laughing all the way March 11, 2006 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
My husband read this book first. He constantly interrupted whatever I was doing to read it aloud because he was enjoying it so much. Finally, so that he would leave me alone, I agreed to read a chapter. All I can say is that a book has never made me laugh out loud like this one did. We both laughed until tears were running down our cheeks! I am so glad that my husband has never had any inclination to run the Iditarod like Paulsen did. I'm sure that if he had, the results would have been as hilarious as Paulsen's experiences. It's funny enough just to see my husband pack up to go duck hunting with our two Labs. As he drives off with the dogs disagreeing about who will get to sit up front, I am always reminded of the Three Stooges, but instead of Larry, Curly, and Moe, it's Stan, Daisy, and Buddy.
Laugh until you cry March 4, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a book for all ages. If my husband, who normally doesn't read anything but business material, can laugh until he cries you have to believe it is funny. I actually bought a second copy because my first had been around so much it was falling apart!
