4 out of 5 stars Arnold - Before the Bull...maby   January 23, 2006

Back in '77 when this book came out I remember walking several miles from East Baltimore to a shopping center that was selling this book and I had to have a copy. Back then I had started the "Original Broadway Barbell Club" in Baltimore,Md and I was ready to venture out into all areas to get as much input and ideas from others with the same goal in mind as I had. After going to the movies and watching the ever cockey Schwarzenegger in Pumping Iron I knew he had knowledge for this sport but that was where the buck stopped. Sure He was good back then but he had better be after Joe Wieder was taking care of him and all he had to worry about was the Big Three, Lifting, Eating and Resting. Besides doing some advertisements for Weider's then famous amoung lifters "Muscle Builder and Power"-a cheap copycat of Hoffman's "Strength and Health" all of Schwarzenegger's time was his own. Do you get what I am saying, He didn't have to work hard at a regular job 5 or 6 days a week and then fit his workouts in where possible, once in this Country he was "Paid to Lift", So he better be the best and there's no excuse if he wasn't. I bought this book not really to read all the bragging Arnold does on himself- and believe me he's really good at that, but rather to read what was written about a sport that in '77 still had not really yet been shown in the limelight. Weightlifting and Bodybuilding had been my sport of choice since the late '60's and not much had really been published up to that time (not counting all of York's Bob Hoffman and his many booklets like "How to Gain Weight","How to use Energol or his even now famous Barebell and Dumbell courses. The book has some good stuff in it. I was always an admirer of Reg Park as was Arnold. Reg was the really down to earth Bodybuilder in my time. He wrote great articles when he did write and he was and still is a very humble man as John C.Grimick was. He knew his stuff and didn't have to show boat to the world to prove it. I still feel that in 1970 when Reg competed against Arnold and came in 2nd that was the biggest set-up in BodyBuilding history (next in line to Arnold winning the Olympia in the early 80's over Boyer Coe, what a joke). Arnold could never match the raw thickness of Reg Park much less of any other body part. Reg sported the best "Bowling Ball"Deltoides and "Diamond "Calfs then anyone in the game. Besides that Reg was a true strongman and had the muscle that can only be gained from working out with heavy tonage! We all listened to Arnold show and tell how great he was in the movie "Pumping Iron" but besides all his bull I really enjoyed the movie watching the lives of the others who were the real building blocks of this sport like Big Lou, Mike Katz (who by the way worked long hours as a full time school teacher), Ken Waller,Serge Nubert and many other (not to mention Franco who was another of Weider's paid actors)!
This book ain't bad if you can stomach all the hype by Arnold.I would advise to buy it used because I don't think that it is worth what they are asking for a new copy. After reading this book and paying to see "Pumping Iron" and "Stay Hungry" neither my wife or me ever saw another Schwarzenegger movie- I hear If you seen one you seen them all anyway. By the way who needs to pay to see this dude with all the birdseed that is coming out of the California Governor's house, maby he better stick to riding motorcycles - oh yea, he ain't much good at that either I hear . When they stitched his lips they should of stitched his mouth at the same time.
"Don't pay over 5 bucks for this book as it is not worth anymore"!
"Enjoy" Joe Kopeck "BROADWAY BARBELL CLUB"

An excellant book! Although you'll hear alot of so called modern day experts put his methods of training down as outdated or obsolete. Most of them dont have a clue. His programs will have ANYONE reach the level they desire as long as they are followed properly. If it's bodybuilding you want this is the way to do it and most of all you dont have to second guess your self looking for some secret or some new method that may be effective but will not be no where near as effective.

This book goes into the mind of a champion in great detail that can be carried over into any sport. That in it's own right makes a worthwhile read. You can not be disappointed and if you do as he say's you too just might become a champion as well.

5 out of 5 stars Great advice and inspiration from the best   November 10, 2005

My twin brother and I read this book in 1978, when we were about 6'2" tall, and no more than 150 pounds. Within months, we must have gained at least 25 pounds in muscle. Within a couple of years, we were hooked on weight-lifting, and have not let-up since.
Not only is it an interesting and inspirational biography of a fascinating life, but indeed, the later chapters prove to be an invaluable guide for exercising and building muscle. There are a lot of "progressive" exercise regimens coming-out all the time, with variations on how many sets to do, how many reps, how long to rest between sets, which exercises are best, but you know what? Sometimes sticking with the basics are the best, and the so-called progressive regimens are just attempts to re-invent the wheel.
Besides, who you gonna take advice on weight-lifting and reaching lofty goals from----no-name, so-called "experts," or someone who has proven himself, like Arnold?!

The story about Arnold Schwarzenegger, an absolute must read, inspires anyone with a dream. The autobiography starts off with little Arnold in Graz, Austria observing weightlifters for the first time at a local gym and thus becomes eternally hooked. From then the text is full of his struggles, failures and triumphs as he climbs up the ranks of the bodybuilding industry. As an added bonus the reader learns about the characters who would themselves become legends.

Now for the true review: the text is full of inspiration and hope. Some people might make the assumption that this only geared towards the weightlifters in this world but that is not the case. In fact this book will surely attract anyone who needs a good push in order to achieve a certain goal. It can certainly attract a youthful audience and keep their attention. It teaches them to stay on track, no matter what, and also to never give up on their goals. This great autobiography shows everyone who reads it that not giving up on a goal can help them achieve anything in life. The great part about this book is that it explains that there will always be bumps along the road of life and that they are merely learning experiences. This is certainly one that you will never want to put down. Therein lies the problem. It is just too short. Regardless of its length, I would surely give it two thumbs up.

5 out of 5 stars The All time best book!   October 7, 2005

I remember back in late 80's/beginning 90's I got myself this book from a friend of mine who was so much into Body building. I immediately was hooked on this book. It's a GREAT book! I began working out (seriously) back in 95 (During my tenure at the Sea).

Today working in the IT, the last couple of years, I have neglected my body enough. I have lost the book but I'm gonna order it right away. How did it all start (allover again?)

I was asked by my colleague to tell a little story about myself. I picked up a photo and gave it to him. I even ended up putting it online on my blog (http://tarrysingh.blogspot.com). I don't know about others but it got me SO motivated that I had to start collecting my all thoughts/material(and this book was an essential ingredient). Well now at 35, I'm back at working out 4 days in the gym. Surprisingly all the things are coming back to me. Muscles are remembering, growing. And I'm back on the healthier path.

Arnold has been a great inspiration to me and will always be.

This book is excellent!
