Arnold vs Sergio February 7, 2005 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
Without a doubt, still one of the most talked about muscle battles of all time was the epic battles of Arnold vs Sergio Oliva "The Myth" as Ricky Wayne had named him.
I had the privledge of seeing Arnold vs Sergio Battle #1 in September of 1969 at the old Brooklyn Academy of Music in Brooklyn, NY. Weider had been building up this contest for an entire year. It was Arnold the NABBA Mr. Universe vs Sergio 2 time IFBB Mr. Olympia, Mr. World and Mr. Universe- The clash of the champions.
In education of a bodybuilder, Arnold says he was blown away on his first sight of Sergio Oliva. Sitting in the audience, it didn't seem that way. Arnold would come out first in the Mr. Universe, hit four quick poses wave and walk off stage indicating that he was saving himself for the Mr. Olympia.
When it came time for the Mr. Olympia, Franco Columbo would come out first. Arnold was next and blew away the audience. The audience was spellbound seeing this massive hulk showing abs and new for Arnold at that time, legs! Seeing Arnold pose was like seeing a much larger Frank Zane. Symetry, cuts and mass like we had never seen before!
Then Sergio came out and it was like King Kong was back in NY! People in the audience responded with "oh my God!" Oliva would hit four quick power poses and was suddenly escorted off by Don Peters, a Mr. America contestant.
Then all three combatants would come back for the epic posedown. Arnold would gently wave his little buddy Franco Columbo aside indicating that this was a battle of the big guys and Arnold and Sergio went at it pose for pose. Arnold even matched Sergio in Oliva's pet poses and more than held his own!
At one point Arnold stepped in front of Sergio and hit his famous "side chest pose" and literally made Sergio disappear! In no way did Arnold seem afraid of Oliva. If he was, he sure concealed it well.
Arnold would lose that first battle on a 5-4 vote out of 9 judges and showed incredible sportsmanship by running out on stage, congratulating Sergio and raising Oliva's hand in victory! Now that is sportsmanship!
In Arnold vs Sergio II, it was Arnold all the way. First in the AAU Mr. World contest held in Columbus, Ohio and again two weeks later in lower Manhatten in the Town Hall Theatre Arnold was the unanamous winner. Sergio showed up smooth in Columbus and smoother in NY. Arnold won easily in both events.
Education of a Bodybuilder is a good biography of Arnold. If you can see it, I also recommend See Arnold Run currently airing on the A&E network. This tv movie showcases Arnold's training for the 1974 Mr. Olympia and running for the 2003 governor of California. It shows Arnold's incredible drive and determination. It also indicates what Arnold had to overcome both in politics and in bodybuilding to reach his goals.
Arnold: The Inspiration for a Bodybuilder October 18, 2004 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Arnold: The Education of a Bodybuilder is a book that reflects on Arnold Schwarzeneggars career in bodybuilding, and how bodybuilding ignited his successful life. Bodybuilders may find great joy in reading this book because of collection of information and tips coming from the best bodybuilder of all time. This book isn't all about bodybuilding though; Arnold talks about his movie career and his pursuit to become the Governor of California. Being successful is the main purpose of this book. You learn to break through your barriers and work hard to achieve your full potential.
precise, concise, honest July 27, 2004 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
--------------- he was the best because he got rid of people and took enough sythetic testonsterone to out develop his rivals ---------------
i disagree with the above remark. I have a 1978 edition & to be honest, Arnold admits: - he moved to America because they had better supplements and D R U G S ( yes, drugs. ). - he somewhat prides himself of his detached attitude and so many times admits he just got rid of whomever stood in his way. - he talks briefly about the sordid link between the gay world & the gym world. - he makes a frequent point of his many affairs.
However it's not a pulp fiction novel but a motivating essay targeting the mainstream audience.
Awesome book for motivation June 9, 2004 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This book is awesome. It was written before Arnold became a politician and movie star alike. This book is pure hard core Arnold thinking. It contains ways he made it to the top of the body building world. Its so motivational and speaks of how he made it. NO BS. Great book to buy for motivation.
Arnolds Philosophy May 10, 2004 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is one great book that talks about the mentality and will power of a young man who turned into a world renowned body builder. This is a must buy, he wrote this book before he became a movie star and a politician. It talks alot about how he felt during the process of becoming the best body builder in the world and how he mentally prepared himself. Inside contains great tips on how to live your life to your own lifestyle, the keys to success, how to motivate your mind to do anything you want it do. I found this book really inspirational because I understand Arnolds will to succeed and can really relate to that. This book definitely helped me work toward my goals and prepare me mentally for the obstacles yet to come. It also has great tips on how to begin your workout training as a beginner and offer many great advices. This is a must buy for body builders, people who wants to work out, or for someone who lacks a strong mentality.
