Very Convincing.... September 17, 2005 12 out of 14 found this review helpful
From my own 36+ years of experience walking with God on & off the mission field, the chapters detailing the author's experience before the "pearlescent" main gate of New Jerusalem really witnessed to me. His experience only takes up two chapters in the book, but for me they were almost life-changing - and they did forever alter my perceptions of my temporary stay here on this earth. Brother Piper writes, "I get frustrated describing what heaven was like, because I can't put into words what it looked like, sounded like, and felt like." Nevertheless, he does a good enough job in my humble estimation. Piper states further, "The only way I've made sense out of that part of the experience is to think that if I had actually seen God, I would never have wanted to return (to earth)." Every sentence he writes seems worthy of pondering & meditating over - it is almost as if one is experiencing what he experienced as it is read. The difference between these two chapters & the rest of the book is dramatic Piper must deal with the reality of a broken body as the result of his horrendous accident & all the patient suffering he has endured as he witnesses to the glories of "90 minutes in Heaven."
It would be worthwhile to buy the book to read those two chapters alone, in my opinion. But the rest of the book is worthwhile for those many who have been & will continue to be encouraged by it in their own walk of faith.
An Interesting Story............... September 9, 2005 11 out of 14 found this review helpful
All these reviews pretty much tell you the basic story. I'm just going to say that I enjoyed the book. It WAS alot about the PAIN that he (Don Piper) went through.......in fact most of the book was about that, but it was still interesting, and his connection to the Other Side was believable. That connection keeps you going throughtout the book. I enjoyed it.
very disappointing September 6, 2005 13 out of 24 found this review helpful
I just bought this book a couple a days ago and it did not take me long to read it, I am honestly thinking about returning this book and getting my money back. I felt that Mr. Piper dealt more with his recovery than with the time he spent in Heaven. Now if someone is looking for a book that deals with the strength and courage of someone who is overcoming a terrible accident, well then this is the book for him/her. But if someone is looking for a book that deals more with near-death experiences and the detail of those experiences, this book will prove to be very disappointing. This book left me hanging, whereas it did not give me enough proof of whether or not Mr. Piper truly did have a near death experience. In my opinion he never truly did die, but rather the paramedics made a serious mistake in determining if he was alive or not. I have read other books on near death experiences and this one I must say was one of the worse!
Outstanding Story of God's Power August 3, 2005 14 out of 17 found this review helpful
I have passed this book on to many of my friends, some just bought it after hearing about it. This is an incredible story of a miracle that God allowed this man to have. He returns to Earth to share his experience of heaven (most of which is also in the bible) yet much of the book is spent discussing the obstacles he had to overcome to live on this Earth again. I'd recommend this book to anyone. If you don't believe yet, you will after you read this book.
Certainly worth reading July 19, 2005 17 out of 19 found this review helpful
Don Piper's semi-short biography/autobiography, 90 Minutes in Heaven, is certainly worth a read.
Although Piper's title may be a little misleading--it does not speak that much on his actual experience--because he only devotes about 2 chapters to his NDE, it is quite an intriguing story. What's more, Don criticizes what is known as the "common" NDE, but immediately defends his own as "authentic." This being my first book about near death experiences, I certainly found Mr. Piper's story to be interesting. For those who think they are crap, and I myself am a little skeptical--though I am turning--take note of Mr.Piper's description of Heaven. More specifically, he notes that there are hymns and songs that he has never heard before, and that the only people that he sees in heaven are deceased loved ones. Now, if that is simply a brain dying, it is certainly interesting how smart it remains. Personally, and I am no scientist, it amazes me that, people whom claim to have actual NDE's say that the only people they see in "heaven" are deceased individuals (The book lead me to do some researching), and are equally surprised to find their personal ideas about heaven to be quite incorrect. Very interesting.
Also, Piper's story about rehabilitation is quite interesting, too. Those who say that is not worth the heaven, but the rehab, are simply wrong. In fact, Piper doesn't achieve much, all the people around him who make him better. If it had been up to Piper, he would still be in heaven, or lack there of for skeptics.
Regardless of whether you believe in them or not, or you are simply trying the subject out, Piper's novel is worth the read. The book itself has simple language, an interesting tone, and a very honest message. Even if you don't believe in God, the people that sacrifice for Piper make it worth reading over and over again.
