excellent but not exactly portable January 19, 2007 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
Aside from being a little too big for a pocket, this guide is excellent. It goes a step beyond some of the other guides by showing drawings of juvenile/first year variants.
Great Guide January 16, 2007 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This field guide is wonderful. The multiple drawings of each species and sex really provide ease in identification. Song descriptions are also provided along with habitat maps. The layout is simple and after a couple I.D.'s you'll be glad you made the purchase.

A must have if you're a bird lover. Always near the top of my pile when I'm scouting out a new bird that I want to identify.
Sibley is the man January 11, 2007 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I work as a field biologist, and the Sibley is a bit like the bible. These east/western US field guide editions split Sibley's big bird book into a reasonable size to carry in your pocket or backpack. This book is essential for a birding enthusiast.
Having said that, sometimes it is most helpful to have photographs, and this book only has Sibley's paintings. Some birds have big male/female plumage differences as well as seasonal differences, and there have been instances where Sibley was not sufficient for me to ID certain birds (ducks in particular). I found my answers instead in the National Geographic field guide series.
Great Bird Guide January 7, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Sibley's Field Guide to Birds is the best guide I have found. It has all the information about the specific birds on one page, so you do not have to keep flipping back and forth from page to page. The illustrations are clear and descriptions concise. Every member of my after-school EcoClub receives a copy when they become a member. Many times I have seen students carrying it with them at recess, checking out the birds on the grounds. It is a little bulky for a field guide, not much, but a little. I'd like it to be a little smaller to fit easier in the pocket, but what would be missing? It is a great guide and well worth the money.
