When we lived in Alameda the western guide was great. Now that we are on the east coast, what can I say? Buy Sibley's.
THE BEST GUIDE TO EASTERN NORTH AMERICA EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! December 25, 2006 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
I have been an avid birder for nearly 4 years now, and own 20+ different field guides, and none have come even close with David Sbiley's guides! If you are looking for a good guide, definitely buy this book! David Sibley's field guide has the most illustrations (including flight) per species than I've ever seen! Below I've compared the number of illustrations from 3 different guides, The Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Eastern North America, Peterson's Field Guide to Eastern Birds, and National Geographic Field Guide to Birds of North America:
Canada Goose:
Sibley: 10 Peterson: 5 National Geographic: 7
Red Crossbill:
Sibley: 9 Peterson: 3 National Geographic: 4
Seaside Sparrow:
Sibley: 10 Peterson: 4 National Geographic: 5
Prothonotary Warbler:
Sibley: 4 Peterson: 3 National Geographic: 2
As you can see, Sibley has the most illustrations for each species compared to the 2 other top bird field guides. The field guide for all of North America is even better, having lots more illustrations than the Eastern or Western Sibley, but it is bigger and heavier, so it's your personal preference.
Sibley guides beat all. December 20, 2006 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
Don't settle for your average birding guide. Sibley has been studying birds his whole life. His respect and love for all species of birds shows in his publications. Whether for yourself or for a gift, do yourself a favor and get the most understandable, dependable, affordable birding guides out there! My Sibleys, though soft-cover, are nicely bound and look as though they will withstand years of use.
FL Birds December 4, 2006 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
Shows birds both in flight an stationary. Having a map alongside the bird rather than in the back is advantageous.
My first and only bird book. November 10, 2006 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
The rest of the reviews pretty much say it all as to this books content. The construction, art work, maps, and descriptions are excellent. Now if I could just get those birds to sit still long enough...
